The Rising Cost of Child Care

Let’s play a little game.

We all know that college can be pretty expensive, right?

Q.

Can you name something that’s even more expensive than tuition for your kids in a 4 year program?

A.

How about childcare between the ages of 1 and 12 years old?

According to care.com, 1 infant child care program runs roughly $6,604 per year. The amounts increase, based on the type of care you choose:

Day care center: $9,672.
Au pair: $18,720.
Nanny: $24,544.

And again…that’s for ONE child.  not twins.

This was one of the main reasons that we, like a lot of parents, decided one of us was going to stay at home with the babies. We both agreed that this was most beneficial for many reasons. The main one was the cost of childcare for a set of twins was up in the three thousand dollar a month range.  That’s essentially one person’s entire paycheck plus help from the other. It didn’t hurt our decision hearing horror stories of children being neglected and victimized at otherwise reputable day care centers. One of the best reasons is the once in a lifetime bond that can be gained and experienced by spending the entire day with little humans that we created.

The roles of who stayed home varied. At first it was her, then it became me. My biggest piece of advice, if this is your choice, is to be mentally and emotionally prepared for the drastic swapping of the gender based ideological stereotype. Now that Summer is almost over, just one more month of this chaos. Then their preschool will begin auctioning off my gently used organs to cover the cost of sending two kids five hours a day.

Enjoy this beautifully made graphic reminding you of everything you’ve given up having children, while I go cry in my cereal.

Despite the never ending chaos that life as a single dad seems to be. Even looking at the costs of my dual tornadoes.  (And the fact that I now realize i’ve lost the shot of owning 2 private islands off the coast of Canada). There isn’t a minute of my life right now with my beautiful daughters that I would trade for the world.
